WOMAN TAKES OWN LIFE, DESPONDENT OVER ILL HEALTH

Mrs. Carrie Hinshaw, of North Eighteenth, Drowns Self in Cistern at Lynn, Indiana

    Funeral Services Here

Had Appeared to be in Better Spirits, And Was Preparing to Return to Home Here

Mrs. Carrie Hinshaw of 324 North Eighteenth Street, following months of despondency because of her long sickness, ended her life last night or this morning early, by drowning herself in a cistern at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Bowen, at Lynn, Ind. The body was discovered in the cistern this morning after Mrs. Hinshaw was missed from her room.
The deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. May Muzzy, of 324 North Eighteenth; four sons, William residing east of the city; Robert, of Dayton, Ohio; Carl and Lynn, both employees of the Daily Times, and who reside at home; two sisters, Mrs. Hester Bowen of Lynn and Mrs. H. H. Locker of this city, and one brother, Claude Muzzy. The husband died about 10 years ago.
Mrs. Hinshaw has been practically an Invalid for many months and has made her home, since her illness, among her children.
    Planned to Come Home
She had apparently been much improved recently and was planning to come to her home here. She had made all arrangements to have the home redecorated and prepared for her return.
Her act was not expected, because she had been less despondent of recent weeks and seemed to be in better health.
It is believed that during the night, while brooding of her illness, she arose and went to the rear of the home, where, removing the cover from the cistern, she lowered herself into the cool water to drown.
    Funeral Monday
When she did not appear from her room at the usual hour an investigation was made by the daughter and the act was then learned of.
Funeral arrangements were not made, pending the arrival of the son from Dayton, but it was stated that the body would likely be brought to the home here, Sunday, and that the services would be hold from the home sometime, Monday.

    Notes:

"The Givens had farms in Madison, Hamilton and Henry Counties. They moved to the family farm in Middletown, Henry County, Indiana, in 1918. It had 40 acres on both sides of the road. This would remain the family home until 1970 when the farm was sold after Elmer and Pearl died.

The home that the family moved into was only a few years old at the time and consisted of four bedrooms, a parlor, a living room, dining room and kitchen, with front and back porches and a cellar. It was not modern and thus did not have running water and electricity until many years later.

The farm was located 2-1/2 miles southeast of Middletown, Indiana and one-half mile south of the Miller Cemetery where Elmer and Pearl Givens are buried.

The three oldest children (Willis, Fern, Audrey) attended the one room Painter School, 1 mile north of the farm until 1920 when the school closed and then the children went to school in Middletown. The family were members of the Middletown Methodist Church and of the Republican Party" (Arthur Givens -unsigned Genealogy, credited to Arthur by his cousin, Stuart Givens.)

Elmer Givens was accustomed to driving the horse and wagon to Brown County to obtain Sorghum; until his death, John Givens came to dinner every Sunday (Kay Hinshaw Spang, granddaughter)

    OBITUARY
Newcastle, Indiana, Courier, Wednesday, August 9, 1922

Wm. Muzzy, a man of sterling worth, was born in Knightstown, Ind., November 10, 1838. He was the son of James and Mary Muzzy.
Up to the age of 23 he was a farmer, and on April 18, 1861 he answered the call of volunteers to defend the Constitution and the old flag he loved. Three times he enlisted and was three times honorably discharged, his final discharge dated September 20, 1865.
After the close of the war he was married to Mary L. Conklin. To them were born five children, Carrie, Cora, Maude and Claude (twins) and Ethalind.
He was generous to the needy, almost to a fault, and the reputation he maintained for honesty and integrity was beyond reproach. He relished a joke and his humorous nature and disposition for making acquaintances made for him a legion of friends.
In 1879, he made a confession of faith in Christ and became a member of the Mt. Summit Christian church.
Mr. Muzzy was a harness maker by trade and for several years plied his trade in Mt. Summit. Six years ago at the age of 78 (long after he had passed the allotted three score and ten), the burden of years began to weigh him down and with much regret he and his faithful help-mate sold their little home in Mt. Summit and went to Newcastle to live with their children. Although he suffered night and day since that time, his iron constitution and wonderful vitality bore him up until at 5 o?clock on the morning of August 5, the bugle from on high sounded the last taps and he peacefully went to
sleep, in that land from which no traveler has ever yet returned, aged 84 years, 8 months and 25 days. Although his faithful wife and loving children will miss him, they know that God knows best and feel a keen sense of satisfaction in knowing he will suffer no more.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Carry Hinshaw, North 18th steet, Newcastle, Mrs. Maude Locker, Grand avenue, Newcastle, and Mrs. Etha Smith, Sulphur Springs, and one son, Claude, Walnut street, Newcastle, one brother, James, the last of seven brothers, of Bryant, Ill, still lives. There are seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One daughter, Cora, preceded him to the other world in June, 1903.
Let me so live that when the summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moves on towards that Mysterious Realm, I can wrap the draperies of my couch about me and lie down to pleasant dreams.

William married CONKLIN, Mary Frances 06 Nov 1866, Wayne County, Indiana. Mary (daughter of CONKLIN, Aaron and GOLDMANN, Lavinia) was born 19 Nov 1847, Miamisburg, Ohio; died 16 Nov 1935, New Castle, Henry, Indiana, USA; was buried Mount Summit, Indiana Cemetery. [Group Sheet]

    HISTORY OF MADISON COUNTY
    Forkner, 1914. Page 437

John L. Givens. A resident of Madison County for sixty-five years, Mr. Givens represents the progressive rural citizenship of Stony Creek township, where he has a fine farm of sixty-two acres, with excellent improvements and a comfortable home for himself and family.
John L. Givens was born in Green Township, Madison County, November 30, 1848, a son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Shawl) Givens. Andrew Givens, the father, was born in the state of Michigan, came to Indiana and was married in Madison County, his wife being a native of this state. He continued to reside in Madison County until his death in 1854. He and his wife were the parents of 3 children, the other two being N.D. Givens, of Indianapolis; and Julius Givens, who is connected with the street railway system in St. Louis.
Mr. John L. Givens was reared in Green township until he reached his majority, and as a boy attended the district school near his home. Green township, while he was growing up, still presented almost an expanse of wilderness, and residents were still engaged in the hard labor of clearing and grubbing and planting the first crops in the hard won fields. That was the training ground for his early life. He was married in Green township to Amanda Heshberger (sic), and their happy married life continued until 1909 when Mrs. Givens died. She was reared in Green and Stony Creek
townships and received her education in the public schools. The four sons born to their marriage are all living in 1913, namely: Horace, who is married and a resident of Stony Creek township; Elmer, who graduated from common schools and is married and lives in Hamilton county; Willard, who graduated from the Lapel High School and in 1913 from the University of Indiana, and is now a principal of a graded school in Noblesville, this state; Asa, who finished the course in common schools, and at the present time is in Indianapolis. Mr. Givens and family are members of the Progressive Dunkard Church. In politics he has always been a regular supporter of the Republican
party up to the campaign of 1912 in which he voted the Progressive ticket.

John married HERSBERGER, Amanda 31 Oct 1875, M.E. Church, Pendleton, In by Rev. Pierce. Amanda (daughter of HERSBERGER, John William and NORRIS, Sarah Ann) was born 23 Jul 1847, Jefferson, Maryland; died 19 Feb 1910; was buried East Grove Lawn Cemetery, Pendleton, Indiana. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Amanda made the trip from Jefferson, Maryland to Pendleton, Indiana in a covered wagon. This trip took 6 weeks. (Oral History - as told by Willard Givens, her son, to Stuart Givens, to this writer on 7/14/2002)
