WOMAN TAKES OWN LIFE, DESPONDENT OVER ILL HEALTH

Mrs. Carrie Hinshaw, of North Eighteenth, Drowns Self in Cistern at Lynn, Indiana

    Funeral Services Here

Had Appeared to be in Better Spirits, And Was Preparing to Return to Home Here

Mrs. Carrie Hinshaw of 324 North Eighteenth Street, following months of despondency because of her long sickness, ended her life last night or this morning early, by drowning herself in a cistern at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Bowen, at Lynn, Ind. The body was discovered in the cistern this morning after Mrs. Hinshaw was missed from her room.
The deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. May Muzzy, of 324 North Eighteenth; four sons, William residing east of the city; Robert, of Dayton, Ohio; Carl and Lynn, both employees of the Daily Times, and who reside at home; two sisters, Mrs. Hester Bowen of Lynn and Mrs. H. H. Locker of this city, and one brother, Claude Muzzy. The husband died about 10 years ago.
Mrs. Hinshaw has been practically an Invalid for many months and has made her home, since her illness, among her children.
    Planned to Come Home
She had apparently been much improved recently and was planning to come to her home here. She had made all arrangements to have the home redecorated and prepared for her return.
Her act was not expected, because she had been less despondent of recent weeks and seemed to be in better health.
It is believed that during the night, while brooding of her illness, she arose and went to the rear of the home, where, removing the cover from the cistern, she lowered herself into the cool water to drown.
    Funeral Monday
When she did not appear from her room at the usual hour an investigation was made by the daughter and the act was then learned of.
Funeral arrangements were not made, pending the arrival of the son from Dayton, but it was stated that the body would likely be brought to the home here, Sunday, and that the services would be hold from the home sometime, Monday.

    Notes:

"The Givens had farms in Madison, Hamilton and Henry Counties. They moved to the family farm in Middletown, Henry County, Indiana, in 1918. It had 40 acres on both sides of the road. This would remain the family home until 1970 when the farm was sold after Elmer and Pearl died.

The home that the family moved into was only a few years old at the time and consisted of four bedrooms, a parlor, a living room, dining room and kitchen, with front and back porches and a cellar. It was not modern and thus did not have running water and electricity until many years later.

The farm was located 2-1/2 miles southeast of Middletown, Indiana and one-half mile south of the Miller Cemetery where Elmer and Pearl Givens are buried.

The three oldest children (Willis, Fern, Audrey) attended the one room Painter School, 1 mile north of the farm until 1920 when the school closed and then the children went to school in Middletown. The family were members of the Middletown Methodist Church and of the Republican Party" (Arthur Givens -unsigned Genealogy, credited to Arthur by his cousin, Stuart Givens.)

Elmer Givens was accustomed to driving the horse and wagon to Brown County to obtain Sorghum; until his death, John Givens came to dinner every Sunday (Kay Hinshaw Spang, granddaughter)
