- Listed on"Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Widows" Book E.D. 125 Pierce City Mo.#24 1891 Listed on Military Service of War Dept. record of Pension Div. give his correct military status. Pension board stated, ''" the name of James H Pope Alias John Pope has not been found on Co. E. 19th Kansas Cal. Don't know whether he received a pension or not.Data received from Washington DC Archives Sept 1 ,1891 Commissioner of pensions replied a request for Pension by James H. Pope(Alias John Pope, John H. Pope) has not been found on rolls Co. E. 19th Kansas Cav. Copies of legal papers confirming that John H. Pope had enlisted and James H. Pope and John H. Pope were one and the same man. Several witnesses swore that they had served with him. Some Militia units were not included on the Federal Military lists. James H. Pope evidently was a widower with 5 children. This family, along with three children by Delila's two previous marriages and the first born son of James and Delila, John Sherman Pope listed as two months old born in Kansas located on 1865 Alexanderia, Leavenworth,Post Office Springdale, Kansas census. J. H.'s parents were from N.C. J.H. was divorced from Delila on Mar. 6,1879 in Lawrence Co., Mo. Lived at Pierce City, Lawrence Co., Mo. after that.
James Henry Pope served as a captain in Union Army during the Civil War.
Early on "Jim" had a career as a cowboy and ranch foreman, later became water commissioner for Interior Dept in Eden Valley, turning an arid plain into a productive, fertile farming community.
