Notes |
- About 1806, William Coe and his wife Lavica (Vicie) Barrett moved to Surry County from Pittsylvania County, VA. They are the ancestors of all of the Coe families who currently live there. And Surry County is home to the greatest concentration of Coe families of any area in the United States. The last time I checked a Mt. Airy telephone directory there were 66 Coe families listed. As of this year, 484 Coe births, 344 Coe marriages and 192 Coe deaths are on file at the courthouse in Dobson,
William Coe was born in 1779 in Loudoun County, VA, a son of Francis P. and Nancy Coe. Francis Coe and his family, after living for many years in Shelburne and Cameron Parishes, Loudoun County, about 1790 moved to Pittsylvania County. They last appear on record in Camden Parish, Pittsylvania County, in 1818 when the Overseers of the Poor allocated $30 for the ?support of Francis P. Coe and wife.? William Coe last appears on record there November 10, 1805, when he was a surety for the marriage of his sister Mary and Daniel Elder. He is listed in the 1810 census of Surry County, NC, as a male 26-45 years of age. (Carl Robert Coe)
