    • Obituary for Rev. Luke G. Showalter
      Rev. Luke G. Showalter, 76, Lititz, (formerly of Ephrata) went to be with the Lord following a lengthy illness on Friday, November 25, 2005.

      Born in West Cocalico Township he was a son of the late Martin G. Showalter and the late Mabel (Gress) Showalter. He was the husband of Arlene M. (Spang) Showalter, having celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on September 4th of this year.

      He was a member of Ephrata United Zion Church. He enjoyed the mountains and started the Denver Nursing Home with his late father in 1958, where he served as the Administrator for several years.

      Luke was elected to the ministry in 1953 and ordained on January 15, 1956. He shared as Bishop of the United Zion Denomination for 14 years and served as Administrator of the United Zion Retirement Community from 1966-1972. He was Pastor of the Ephrata Untied Zion Church from 1953-1989 and Senior Full-time Pastor at Ephrata Church from 1974-1989. He shared in the Chaplaincy program of the Community Hospital in Lancaster and Ephrata Community Hospital. Luke was chairman of the Ephrata/Akron Ministerium for 2 years and shared in the preaching ministry at the Stevens United Zion Church from 1993-1996. He also assumed Pastorate at the Elizabethtown United Zion Chruch on April 14, 1996 and started serving as Chaplain at the United Zion Retirement Community on July 9, 1997, retiring in February of this year.

      Surviving in addition to his wife are his 3 sons, Glenn L., married to Debra (Seibert) Showalter of Lititz, PA, Jay H., married to Miriam (Hoover) Showalter of Ephrata, PA, and Luke K., married to Lynda (Brady) Showalter of Manheim, PA; 2 daughters, Martha J., married to Bruce Martin of Terre Hill, PA, and Cheryl L., married to Myron Zwally of Ephrata, PA; a sister, Irene, married to Harry Hoover of Ephrata, PA; 14 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his brother Chester Showalter and his sister Ruth Showalter.

      Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the Ephrata United Zion Church, with Bishop Carl Eberly, Bishop Emeritus Amos Weidman, Bishop Chuck Brown and Rev. Melvin Horst officiating. Interment will follow in the Blainsport United Brethren Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday, November 29th and also one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
