Jay W. Hersberger
Nov. 18, 1928 - March 31, 2005
"LAKE PLACID, Fla. - Jay Warren Hersberger, Lake Placid, Fla., 76,
formerly of Lapel, died March 31, 2005, after a brief illness. He was
born Nov. 18, 1928, in Lapel, the son of Tilghman and Villie (Hinton)
Hersberger. He was retired from the United States Navy as a chief petty
officer and fire control technician.
"He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 212 ,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Trinity United Methodist Church, life member
of AMVETS and Fleet Reserve Association.
"He is survived by four children, daughter, Lynn (husband, Barie) VanZel
of Altamonte Springs, Fla., daughter, Gail (husband, John) Specht of
Lapel, son, Jay Hersberger of Lake Placid, Fla., and Lyle Hersberger of
Brandwine, Md.; nine grandchildren, Sherri (husband, Scott) Noble of
Lapel, Jessica (husband, Kerry) Stewart of Indianapolis, Nelson (wife
Emily) Specht of Middletown, Amanda (husband, Scott) King of Lapel,
Wesley Hersberger of Brandywine, Md., Brittany Hersberger of Brandywine,
Md., Eric Hersberger of Lake Placid, Fla., Dr. Cindy (husband, Joshua)
Cohen of Connecticut, and Cathy Sigler of Lexington, S.C.; seven
great-grandchildren, Shelby Noble of Lapel, Mitchell Noble of Lapel,
Abigail Specht of Lapel, Chrystal King of Lapel, Amber King of Lapel,
Calvin Perrie Specht of Middletown, and Grayson Stewart of Indianapolis;
brother, Morris (wife, Jean) Hersberger of Lapel; brother, John (wife,
Sue) Hersberger of Winchester; sister, Martha Jane (husband, Max) Lee of
Pittsburgh, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Hersberger of Noblesville.
"He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace Perrie
Hersberger; and a brother, Paul Herbert Hersberger.
"A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Scott E. Hersberger
Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel, with the Rev. Evan Lash
officiating. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the
funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Lapel Post 212
American Legion Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 789, Lapel, IN 46051 or to
