    • Lawrence William Spang, 91, Lawrence William Spang, 91, went home to heaven on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005 after a long and fulfilling life.
      He was born in Grand Rapids March 29, 1914 to Matthew A. Spang and Nora Ann Scollard Spang. He graduated from Itasca Junior College in 1934 and Marquette University Law School in 1937. He was admitted to the Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio state bars. He had a very distinguished career in the practice of law, starting in Duluth and then relocating to Cleveland, Ohio as a senior executive and chief legal counsel for Hanna Mining Company until his retirement in 1976. He then enjoyed his retirement years in Delray Beach, Fla. In addition to many professional and civic organizations, he was a member of Delta Theta Phi Fraternity, Kitchi Gami Club of Duluth, The Clevelander Club, The Union Club, The Country Club and the Tavern Clubs of Cleveland. He founded and underwrote the Annual Spang Medical Lectureship at St. Mary?s Medical Center in Duluth. He was a devoted Catholic and generous to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
      Mr. Spang was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers, Anthony, James, William and Leonard; his beloved first wife, Goldeen Spang (nee Brownlee) and his second wife, Dorothy Spang (nee Adair).
      He is survived by his daughter, Georgia Ann Van Fossen of Pinehurst, N.C.; grandchildren, Jeffrey C. Van Fossen of Akron, Ohio and Amy D. Newton of Ashburn, Va.; four great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.
      Services: A funeral mass was celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, Delray Beach, Fla. Entombment will be held at Knollwood Mausoleum in Mayfield Heights, Ohio at a later date.
      In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a local Hospice chapter or to a charity of your choice.
