LAPEL, Ind. ? Bernice Montgomery, 93, Lapel, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Saint John?s Medical Center in Anderson following complications due to congestive heart failure.
She was born on Nov. 28, 1917, in Madison County to Horace and Nettie (Heiny) Givens. She resided in Lapel most of her life.
She graduated from Lapel High School in 1936 and went to beauty school shortly thereafter in Indianapolis.
She married John Montgomery in 1938 and a son, Ted, was born in 1940.
Bernice completed her beautician training in 1937 and worked in a beauty shop in Indianapolis for a short while before moving back to Lapel in 1943. She owned and operated Bernice?s Beauty Shop in Lapel since 1944. Her beauty shop was a very important part of her life and she enjoyed many customers over the years, retiring at the age of 79. She always felt like her customers were her family.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church; the Solar Order of Eastern Star; and the Lapel American War Mothers. She loved her family, friends, and her home. Working in her yard was one of her favorite pastimes. She especially loved planting lots of flowers every summer. Bernice also enjoyed watching all sports on television, her favorites being the Indiana Pacers, the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana and Purdue University, and golf.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Janice Montgomery of Anderson; two nieces, Iris Parker of Pendleton and Betty (husband, Wilber) Eiler of Fortville; a nephew, Bob (wife, Diana) Dunham of Pendleton; and many loving great-nieces and nephews, to whom she was very close, who loved her and cared for her to the very end; and other family members and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 44 years, John Montgomery; her son, F. Ted Montgomery, who passed away April 27, 2009; a brother, John Givens; and a sister, Eloise Dunham.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel.
