    • NEWINGTON, CONN. AND DEXTER - George W. Sampson, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 25, 1925, in St. Albans, a son of Ralph E. and Grace (Bowker) Sampson.

      He graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Class of 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot cadet during World War II and then attended the University of Maine on the G.I. Bill. George was a member of Phi Mu Delta. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and retired from Northeast Utilities after many years of employment. He married his beloved wife, the former Isabelle Sands, on Aug. 23, 1947 and was married for almost 66 years before her death in June 2013. George was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Newington since 1954 and served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also involved in Marriage Encounter for many years. He was also a member of the Newington Lions Club, Newington Tennis Club, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Bridge Club and a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. While in Maine, he attended St. Anne?s Church in Dexter.

      A loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he leaves his six children, Gail Miller and husband, Dennis of Enfield, Conn., Carl Sampson and wife, Melanie of Enfield, Conn., Ralph Sampson and wife, Darcey of Newington, Conn., Jill Sampson of Vienna, Lynn Martha and husband, Jay of Cheshire, Conn., and Leigh McClain of Newington, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, Lily, Evan and Olivia. He is also survived by sisters, Barbara Clukey of Dexter, and Shirley Palmer of E. Longmeadow, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and Sands family in-laws. He was predeceased by his brother, Elwood and his wife, Freda, brothers-in-law, Anthony Clukey and Cal Palmer, and grandnephew, Chuckie Weaver.

      Relatives and friends will be invited to call at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter, in the spring of 2014. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in Ferndale Cemetery, Ripley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Historical Society, 13 Church St., Dexter, ME 04930.
