    Notes:

    SPANG, Carl F. Of Wellesley, MA, and Durham, NH, passed away on March 1st 2012. All who knew him will miss him. Born in Quincy, MA, on December 20th, 1916, Carl was one of seven siblings. He attended Thayer Academy and Cornell University, excelling in football and other academic pursuits. Graduating from Cornell in 1939, having been named one of the All-America athletes of the year by the Associated Press, he entered the Navy as a pilot and served in the Pacific Front. After the Navy, he returned to Needham, MA, to help run the family business - Needham Manufacturing - with his brother William Spang. On June 22, 1946, he married Ruth Patterson of Wellesley, MA, and the couple settled into a charming replica Swiss farmhouse near Ruth's parent's home in Wellesley. They lived there for 20 years, raising two children, Sara and Carl Jr. In 1966 they moved to Ohio when Carl took a senior management position with Hobart Corporation of Dayton, OH. Carl enjoyed a successful sales career with Needham Manufacturing and during his early years with Hobart, when he managed Hobart's Sales for New England and the New York Metro Area. He was also an irrepressible inventor and was granted several patents for food preparation machines, following in the footsteps of his father, Joseph Spang, who invented the Cube Steak Machine. In 1968, Carl was inducted in the Cornell Athletic Hall of fame for his Football achievements. He also served on the Board of Reed and Barton for many years. He had a life-long passion for cuisine and its preparation. When in a restaurant, he would quickly make his way to the kitchen for a chat with the staff. A visit to the market would include going behind the meat counter to review slicers, grinders, and anything else mechanical. Ruth and Carl retired to Barnstable, MA, and enjoyed many years of activities on the Cape, especially with the Wianno Club (golf for Carl) and the Barnstable Public Library (literature for Ruth). Later they moved to North Hill in Needham, MA. After Ruth passed away in 2000, Carl moved to Durham, NH. Carl was appreciated and loved by all.
