Ruth ("Ruthie") Marie Klitz, 84, passed away peacefully in Clovis, California on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, surrounded by her family.
Ruth was born April 14th, 1924 in the small farming town of Huron, South Dakota to Mark Charles Spang and Loretta (Weicherding) Spang as the eldest of four beautiful daughters. She grew up in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Together the four energetic and close-knit sisters shared many good years together in Ventura County before and during their married lives.
Ruth and her husband, Norm, met in July 1944 at the Seabee Base in Port Hueneme, California where Ruth lived and worked. After a few months Norm left for his second tour of duty on Tinian Island in the Pacific. Upon Norm's return to the states, Ruth surprised him by greeting his ship in Bremerton, Washington. They proceeded to marry on March 9th, 1946 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. After a short stay in Cleveland, Ohio, they moved west to California with their first child while pulling a decrepit, two wheeled trailer behind a 1941 De Soto on old Route 66. Once in California, they enjoyed 50 years of marriage and made lifelong friendships in the communities of Ventura, Lompoc, Orcutt and Grover Beach.
In addition to raising five children, Ruth was very active in many organizations. She was president of the Altar Society of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Ventura and Treasurer of the Village Country Club in Lompoc. Over the years she enjoyed a full palette of activities including golf, tennis, bridge, painting, traveling, sewing and antiquing. She was passionate about, and had a knack for, interior decorating, always welcoming guests into her beautiful, and eclectic homes for entertaining. Her life was filled with energy, creativity, good friends, fun and a tremendous compassion for others. We will miss her zest and excitement for taking on new projects and her ability to light up a room with her contagious smile.
Ruth is survived by children Joann Crawford (Steve) of Clovis; Linda Steffen of Lilliwaup, Washington; Gary Klitz (Kathy) of Fresno; Steven Klitz (Cyndi) of Sherwood, Oregon and Lori Hollister (Steve) of Arroyo Grande. Her three sisters; Marjorie Hixon, Phyllis Books and JoAnn Held still reside in Ventura County. Her sister-in-law, Eloise Klitz, resides in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ruth was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of 50 years, Norman, and her parents Mark and Loretta Spang.
A Rosary will be held on Friday, August 1st at 6:00 pm at Lady Family Mortuary, 555 Fair Oaks Avenue, Arroyo Grande. A Memorial Mass and celebration of Ruth's life will begin on Saturday, August 2nd at 10:00 am at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 800 Bello Street, Pismo Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Friars at St. Paul the Apostle Church or the Alzheimer's Association, 3480 South Higuera St, Ste 120, San Luis Obispo, Ca 93401. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Green Gables home in Clovis for the wonderful attention Ruth received for the past three years.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lady Family Mortuary and Crematory of Arroyo Grande. Published in Santa Maria Times on July 26, 2008

  9. 15.  SPANG, Phyllis Jean Descendancy chart to this point (5.Mark3, 2.Sarah2, 1.Brigit1) was born 05 Feb 1929, Huron, South Dakota; died 28 May 2009, Ojai, California.

    Notes:

Phyllis (affectionately known as Flip), 80, a resident of Ojai, Calif., passed away quietly and peacefully on May 28, 2009, in Ojai, embraced by her husband Bill, and two generations of her family.

Phyllis was born in the small farming town of Huron, South Dakota on February 5, 1929, to Mark Charles Spang and Loretta Catherine (Weicherding) Spang. Phyllis was the third child of Mark and Loretta's four lovely daughters, the renowned "Spang girls". The family moved to Ventura when she was eight. She had fond memories of her childhood in Huron and for a time in Waseca, MN, where the girls fished in the ice with their dad. In Ventura, she attended Holy Cross grade school and the Academy of St. Catherine.

Phyllis and her husband James William (Bill) Books, met in Ventura and married in June 1947 at the Old Mission Church. Phyllis and Bill moved to Ojai shortly after the birth of the first child, Gwendolyn, they lived in Ojai for the remainder of their lives raising their three daughters, Kathleen and Marsha. Their weekend gatherings at their badminton court were wildly touted and enjoyed by all their friends. Bill and Phyllis made lifelong friends in Ojai and in the nearby Matilija Canyon, where they kept a weekend cabin. A place for their children to fish and play in unspoiled surroundings with close friends.

In addition to raising three daughters, Phyllis was an accomplished seamstress, painter, golfer, tap dancer and a fiercely competitive tennis player; she exhibited great enthusiasm in any endeavor she tackled. Phyllis served as President of the PTA of her children's school, St. Thomas Aquinas, and served on the Altar Society at St. Thomas Aquinas parish. She maintained a close relationship with her three Spang sisters and her parents; a traditional, close-knit family was an important aspect in the rearing of her daughters. She taught her girls unconditional love, respect for others, and was rarely judgmental; a truly devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Phyllis had a great sense of humor, loved cooking and enjoyed entertaining often and with flair.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, Bill Books. Her daughters, Gwen Books of Atherton, Calif., Kathleen Nolan and Marsha (Michael) Vaughan of Ojai. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Benjamin Kolowich, San Francisco, Calif., Erica Castro Nolan, Ojai, Amber Sakai, Beverly Hills, Calif., and Brandon Vaughan, Ventura. She also leaves 2 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 remaining Spang sisters, Margie Spang Hixon Miller and Jo Ann Spang Held. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Mark and Loretta Spang; and her sister, Ruth Spang Klitz.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at The San Buenaventura Mission on Monday, June 8, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the , 1528 Chapala Street, #204, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers at Autumn Years in Ojai for their devoted, loving care of Phyllis over the last 14 months; the staff cared for her as only a family would for their own mother. Mrs. Books has been entrusted to the care of the award winning family owned Joseph Reardon Funeral Home, Ventura, Calif.; 805-643-8623.
