36. | SPANG, Matthias (6.Mattheus2, 1.Anna1) was born 17 Dec 1774; died 08 Oct 1846; was buried Lutheran Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Maryland. Notes:
Little was known of Matthias until I stumbled across a listing on World Connect Project for Matthias Spong. His father was listed as Hans George Spang/Spong who changed his name in 1752. It also listed George and Frederick Spong whom I know as the sons of Hans George Spang. It also listed a Leonard Spong without additional information. Many researchers attempt to connect Leonard/ Leonhardt Spang to Hans George Spang but the relationship has not been established. I have attempted to correspond with the creator of the Spong material but he has failed to answer three requests. This material is added as a possible connection with the source of Spong.ftw listed to show its source.
There does appear to be a discrepancy between Mattheus, born about 1759 and Matthias born 1774. It is established that a Matthias was christened in 1774 as the son of Matthias and Sophie at Dunkel's Church in 12 25/1774. I have been unable to find the marriage of Matthias and Sophie as yet.

In 1837 the public-houses had increased to nine. The "Washington" was kept by Abraham Markley, the "Rising Sun" by Samuel Sharpless, the "Eagle" by Henry Kerr, the Norristown Hotel by Jacob Spang, and the "Pennsylvania Farmer" by Daniel Emery.
As indicative of the charges going on, we may mention that as public-houses the Washington House, the Rising Sun and Norristown Hotel have for some time ceased to exist. The "Eagle" is the present Rambo House, since greatly enlarged.

CHARLES FREDERICK SPANG was born in Berks Co., Pa. in 1809. His great-grandfather, the progenitor of the family in this country, was HANS GEORGE SPANG, who emigrated in 1751 from Rotterdam, Holland, to America, and settled in Greenwich Twp., Berks Co., Pa. Of HANS? six sons, LEONARD and GEORGE served in the war of independence; the former died a prisoner of war in Trenton, N. J.; the other went to Europe with Gen. Kuyphausen, who had commanded the Hessians, and became the resident of Bremen, where he acquired a large fortune, and died without immediate heirs in 1826. A portion of his distant relations in America are now claimants of the estate. Another son, FREDERICK SPANG, became the owner of the Oley furnaces at Semple, Pa, one of the oldest works of the kind in the U. S., having been erected in 1772. He left this property to his son, HENRY S. SPANG, afterward moved to Huntingdon Co., Pa., where he established iron-works. The Pa. canal was opened about this time to Huntingdon, thus offering a market in Pittsburgh for their products.
CHARLES FREDRICK SPANG, the junior member of the firm, came with his father to Huntingdon, and was an active assistant in the conduct of the business...The formation of the firm of H. S. SPANG & Son, and the erection of the Etna Iron-works on the site of a sickle-factory that had been built at Etna in 1817. The firm was destined to take a prominent place among the manufacturers of the west. The son, now 19 years of age, became the business manager and a resident here. On the death of H. S. SPANG, the firm became SPANG & Co. (CHARLES F. SPANG and James McAuley). The business was conducted under this style till 1858, when the present firm of SPANG, Chalfant & Co. was formed, consisting of CHARLES H. SPANG, John W. Chalfant, C. B. Herron and George A. Chalfant. In 1878 the SPANG Steel & Iron Co. (limited) was organized as a branch of the above. Its officers are Campbell B. Herron, president; John C. Porter, treasurer, and George A. Chalfant, general manager.
In the year 1858 MR. SPANG moved to Nice. France, where he has since resided, making occasional visits to his native country. He was a pioneer in the iron business here, and was the first manufacturer of iron tubing west of the Allegheny mountains. He was one of the early directors of the Bank of Pittsburgh, one of the founders of the Western Pa. hospital, and a corporator of the Allegheny Cemetery, and a vestryman of Trinity Church.
CHARLES H. SPANG, son of C. F. SPANG, and a member of the firm of SPANG, Chalfant & Co., was born in Pittsburgh. He was educated in the city, and succeeded his father in the business. NORMAN SPANG, the second son, who is connected with the business, resides in Pittsburgh.

Jacob K. Spang, a prominent retired citizen of Reading, was born in Oley township, Berks county, son of Jacob S. and Deborah (Kline) Spang, and a grandson of Frederick Spang, an important figure of the time of the iron boom in the early part of the eighteenth century.
Jacob S. Spang early in life took up the pursuits of his fathers, and for many years was engaged in the iron business. He also owned and operated much farming property throughout Berks county, and at one time, conducted a mercantile establishment at Spangsville, a settlement named in his honor. He died in 1862 aged sixty-four years. His wife lived to the advanced age of eighty-one years, dying in the faith of the Lutheran church, to which her husband had also belonged. He was a Whig, and at the time of the formation of the Republican party joined its ranks.
Jacob K. Spang received a common school education, and while still in his 'teens worked in his father's store and around the furnaces. In 1865 he went to Dauphin county and engaged in the manufacture of iron, later removing to Hamburg, Pa., in the same line of business, and after three years in the latter place came to Reading, becoming associated with Bushong & Co., being one of the promoters of the Keystone Furnaces, holding the responsible position of superintendent for fifteen years. He then left the firm and purchased the Maiden-creek furnace property, which he personally conducted for a number of years, after which, in 1894 he discontinued the manufacture of iron and lived retired for a few years. Mr. Spang still owns this property, a very valuable one, and has also several fine farming properties, which he rents. Mr. Spang has been a very active business man, and has done much to further the business and manufacturing interests of this section.
Mr. Spang was married in 1861 to Sarah Kauffman, daughter of Samuel Kauffman, one of the early iron manufacturers of this section. Four children have blessed this union: Fanny m. Charles Breneiser, a tobacco manufacturer; Mary; Samuel m. Miss Ella Rick, and is connected with the Colonial Trust Co.; and Alice, at home. Politically Mr. Spang is a Republican.
