1824 - 1895 (70 years)
Generation: 1
1. | HERSBERGER, John William was born 27 Dec 1824, Maryland; died 24 Mar 1895, Madison County, Indiana; was buried East Grove Lawn Cemetery, Pendleton, Indiana. Notes:
"When last heard from in February,1922, they had 38 living grandchildren, 93 great grandchildren, and 11 great, great grandchildren." (Henry P. Hersperger)
They came from Maryland in about 1845 and settled on a farm between Lapel and Pendleton, Indiana.
_______________________________
"John William Hersberger whose father was a slave owner was orphaned at a tender age by the death of his parents and two brothers. He was put into the home of a Cobbler by an uncle, but did not like it and ran away. He was found hiding in a wool wagon by a kindly farmer who took and raised him to young manhood. He married quite young to Sandra Ann Norris and raised 14 children. They moved from Maryland (abt. 1845) to Madison County, Indiana and cleared the land and built two cabins soon after their marriage, and that is where they raised their family. Aunt Ellas son Virgil Sears owns the farm and lives on it yet, in 1962.The first several years in Indiana while getting the land cleared he walked five miles and back to work in a mill at Pendelton, Indiana, and as the children became old enough they walked to work with him."
This was in the material from Walt Engle who credits his grandmother, Donna Mabel Wise-Engle, as written up by her son, Ralph and which Walt later obtained. It helps explain what happened to his two brothers and may also account for the move to Indiana.

The home that the family moved into was only a few years old at the time and consisted of four bedrooms, a parlor, a living room, dining room and kitchen, with front and back porches and a cellar. It was not modern and thus did not have running water and electricity until many years later.
The farm was located 2-1/2 miles southeast of Middletown, Indiana and one-half mile south of the Miller Cemetery where Elmer and Pearl Givens are buried.
The three oldest children (Willis, Fern, Audrey) attended the one room Painter School, 1 mile north of the farm until 1920 when the school closed and then the children went to school in Middletown. See Ann Smart's "Descendants of John B. Hersberger" for details of Esmond's life.
He was a very prominent man in Anderson and written up in the Centennial History of the town in 1925. His first wife, Katharine Langell, was a school principal which was unusual for a woman at that time and he was a real estate broker and had been an officer during the war. He enlisted during World War I and they married a few months after his enlistment. A year later they had a baby, probably while he was off training soldiers. The baby named Katherine died when she was one month old and is buried at East Maplewood.
He is no where to be found in the 1930 census and she is living with her parents using the Hersberger name, showing married and working as a principal. Her obituary lists her as Miss Katharine G. Langell. She clearly was very prominent in the Anderson public school's administration for many years.
In the meantime he moved to Chicago became a principal and eventually remarried. At some point he purchased two cemetery plots at the Acacia Park Masonic Cemetery in Rosemont, IL where he buried his second wife, Emma E. Hautau. He was cremated according to his death certificate, but his ashes aren't at Rosemont. There was no obituary for him when he died at age 95 and he had outlived all but two of his siblings. A law firm handled his final arrangements.

Milton Hersberger, 85, of Port Clinton, O., a former test pilot and airport manager who founded the Island Airlines, belived to be the shortest in the United States, died yesterday in Magruder Hospital after a long illness.
A native of Anderson, Ind., and a resident of Port Clinton many years, Mr. Hersberger became a pilot during the early 1920?s. He was a test pilot and manager of airports in Chicago, Youngstown, and Sandusky, O. before moving to Port Clinton in 1930 and founding the Island Airlines. The airline flew shuttle flights from its base in Port Clinton to an airport Mr. Hersberger owned on South Bass Island and to fields he leased on Middle Bass, North Bass, and Kelleys islands.
Started with 2 Planes
In addition to passenger service, the airlines carried mail and miscellaneous freight, and made emergency flights. At one time known as Air Tours, Inc., the airlines initially had two planes. In 1935, Mr. Hersberger acquired two Ford Tri-motor planes, a craft known as the Tin Goose. He frequently claimed ownership of seven of the Ford Trimotor planes of which only 198 were built between 1928 and 1933. He retired in 1953, when he sold the airlines and three of his last four trimotor planes.
Former Caf? Owner
In addition, Mr. Hersberger was the former owner of Urb?s Caf?, Port Clinton, and was a real estate salesman. He owned several office buildings, including the Hersberger Building in downtown Port Clinton.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; stepson, Arthur Van Rensselaer; stepdaughter, Mrs. Sue Ann Coyle, and five stepgrandsons.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Neidecker-LeVeck-Crosser Mortuary, Port Clinton where the body will be after 2 p.m. tomorrow. The family requests that any contributions be to the charity of the donor?s choice.

MARTHA LEES FEB. 18, 1938 - JUNE 16, 2006 SOCIAL WORKER, COUNSELOR : Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Deceased Name: MARTHA LEES FEB. 18, 1938 - JUNE 16, 2006 SOCIAL WORKER, COUNSELOR
People rarely spoke of Martha "Marty" Lees without using the word "caring."
Mrs. Lees, a longtime social worker and counselor from Ross, died in an automobile accident on Friday. She was 68.
In the mid-1980s, Mrs. Lees, her words tough but kind, changed the lives of young women when she worked as one of the first directors of counseling at Carlow University.
When she arrived, she greatly expanded services, creating an entire department, said her friend of 35 years, Martha Ezzel, a Carlow faculty member who once served as dean of students and who hired Mrs. Lees.
"She was perfect for the job. What you saw was her skill in working with young people. She was a guiding light."
Students stressed by academic rigor or beset by personal crises went to Mrs. Lee upset and confused. They left as friends.
The former Carlow president, Sister Grace Ann Geibel, said, "If I knew that a student was seeing Marty for counseling, I always sighed a sigh of relief, because I knew that the student was in good hands."
Mrs. Lees grew up on a farm near Lapel, Ind. She began her undergraduate studies at Ball State University in Indiana and finished at the University of Pittsburgh, eventually earning a master's in social work from Pitt.
She lived in Pittsburgh for 43 years and forged a career as a social worker and director of counseling and maintained a private counseling practice for many years.
At Carlow, she didn't know what 9 to 5 was, said Sister Geibel. She spent countless hours with students and "gave of her time over and above the rest of us."
She once paid the entire pre-school bill for the child of a single mother who could not. She also donated $500 for another single mom to travel to Ohio and back to care for a sick parent.
She is survived by her husband, Max G. Lees; three daughters, Minda J. Lees of Mount Kisco, N.Y., Melanie J. Lees and Melissa J. Lees of Salt Lake City; a son, Mark G. Lees of Allison Park; two brothers, Morris Hershberger of Lapel, Ind., and John Hershberger of Winchester, Ind.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Hiland Presbyterian Church, 845 Perry Highway, Ross.
Donations may be made to the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, Box 9024, Pittsburgh 15224.
Arrangements are by T.B. Devlin Funeral Home.
