    • Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, in Golden Oakes Advanced Assisted Living in Proctor, under the care of St. Mary's Hospice. Marian Ellen Alden was born May 25, 1913, in Bovey, to Sherman Thomas and Margaret Cecelia (Doyle-Welch) Alden. She attended school in Hibbing and graduated from Hibbing High School. Marian also attended and graduated in 1948 from the University of Oklahoma. Marian served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She married Dr. Anthony J. Spang on September 30, 1978, and they resided in St. Anne's Residence in Duluth. Marian was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea, the Third Order of Carmelites, the Apostolate of Fatima and the Legion of Mary. Marian was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dr. Anthony Spang in 1986; brother Richard Alden; sisters Hazel Carlson, Helen Johnson, and Geraldine Alden. She is survived by her stepchildren, James (Kathie) Spang of Elgin, Ill., David (Toby) Spang of PuertaVallarta, Mexico, and Janet (Thomas) Stanley of Duluth; five step grandchildren, Bret (Tracy) Stanley, William (Jennifer) Stanley, Joseph Stanley, Sarah Spang, and Jeffery Spang; nine step great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews Shirley Carlson of Albany, Minn., Richard (Grace) Carlson of Albany, and Lee Johnson of Los Angeles; and sister-in-law Kathleen Alden of Phoenix. VISITATION: 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Duluth. Burial at Itasca Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
