"John William Hersberger whose father was a slave owner was orphaned at a tender age by the death of his parents and two brothers. He was put into the home of a Cobbler by an uncle, but did not like it and ran away. He was found hiding in a wool wagon by a kindly farmer who took and raised him to young manhood. He married quite young to Sandra Ann Norris and raised 14 children. They moved from Maryland (abt. 1845) to Madison County, Indiana and cleared the land and built two cabins soon after their marriage, and that is where they raised their family. Aunt Ellas son Virgil Sears owns the farm and lives on it yet, in 1962.The first several years in Indiana while getting the land cleared he walked five miles and back to work in a mill at Pendelton, Indiana, and as the children became old enough they walked to work with him."

This was in the material from Walt Engle who credits his grandmother, Donna Mabel Wise-Engle, as written up by her son, Ralph and which Walt later obtained. It helps explain what happened to his two brothers and may also account for the move to Indiana.
