  • Notes
    • Jean A. Spang was born September 24, 1922, at Huron, SD, to Francis and Ruth (Walter) Spang. He graduated from Huron High School in 1941. In March 1947, Jean joined the South Dakota Air National Guard. He was called to active service in 1951, during the Korean War and served at the Ellsworth Air Force Base.

He married Betty Siegfried at Madison, SD, on December 30, 1951. The couple lived in Illinois and Rapid City before returning to Sioux Falls in 1952. During his 32 years in the South Dakota Air National Guard, he worked as an Air Craft Mechanic, Flight Engineer, Assistant Flight Line Chief, and Maintenance Control Supervisor. Jean was the recipient of the Airman of the Year Award. He retired in 1979 as Chief Master Sergeant. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, State President of SD Air National Guard Enlisted Association and the American Legion.

In 1971, the family purchased their lake home at Madison, SD. This was regarded as his "home away from home". He loved fishing and spending time outdoors. Jean would frequently wake early in the day and take long drives watching for wildlife. A man with no enemies, he would take care of neighboring homes and make sure his friends had their morning newspaper. Jean was blessed with a strong work ethic. Coupled with his nurturing and friendly spirit, he always had a list of tasks to do for friends. In the center of his life, however, was his family. He adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Betty Spang, Sioux Falls, SD; son, Mark Spang and his wife, Marlene, Waukesha, WI; daughters, Linda Harrell and her husband, Jim, Escondido, CA, Paula Ericson and her husband, Keith, Salt lake City, UT, Sally Shields and her husband, Terry, Bluffdale, UT; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and his sister, Jeanette Schiermer, Minneapolis, MN. His parents, a daughter, Cassie, and a brother, Howard, preceded him in death.
