Mathias Spang, a prominent and enterprising farmer, on section 11, Genesee Township, was born April 1, 1837, Prussia. John Spang, his father, was of the same nativity, and was a stone cutter. He died in 1843, at 45 years of age. He had been twice married, and was the father of three sons and a daughter by his first wife: John is a stone-cutter in the land of his birth; Peter is an officer in the French Army, and resides at Paris, France; William is a farmer in Racine Co., Wis.; the daughter is married, and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. The senior Spang was married about two years after the death of his first wife, to Lucy Mergan, daughter of a German farmer. She had become the mother of three children when she became a widow. Anthony, her second child, is a farmer in the Province of Ontario, Canada; Margaret lives in Ontario.
Mr. Spang is the oldest of the children born of the second marriage. The three little ones were such in very fact, and the mother managed to keep her little flock together until her son was old enough to maintain the family. He had learned the trade of molder, and followed it as a business until he was 20 years of age, when he became liable to the conscription. To avoid being drafted into the German army, he came with is mother, brother and sister, to America. They landed at Quebec, and proceeded at once to Toronto, where Mr. Spang obtained employment as molder. He had testimonials from his employers in is native land, of whom he acquired a knowledge of his business and with whom he remained until he left Germany. The evidence of his qualifications procured him a situation, which he filled until his marriage.
He entered into a matrimonial alliance with Mary Morden, Jan. 8, 1865. Mrs. Spang is the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (White) Morden, and was born June 1, 1848. Her parents were farmers in the Province of Ontario, and still reside in the Dominion. Their family included four sons and five daughters, Mrs. S. being the oldest of the latter. She was reared to womanhood in her native province, and is the mother of nine children, born as follows: Lucy, Oct. 25, 1867; John, Nov. 17, 1869; Anthony, Aug. 7, 1871; Mathias, June 27, 1873; Lydia, June 7, 1876; Mary, Nov. 19, 1878; Anna, March 19, 1880; Lucinda, Oct. 25, 1881; William, Sept. 27, 1883. The oldest child was born in Ontario Co., Canada.
The family came in 1868 to Chicago, where they remained through the winter. They were three individuals - father, mother and an infant child. In the spring ensuing they came to Whiteside County, and purchased 50 acres of land in Genesee Township, near Coleta. This was the beginning of the career of Mr. Spang as a farmer under the fostering influences of a republican government. He has increased his estate to 98 acres in extent, and made creditable and valuable improvements.
Among the people of his own nationality he is in a sense a leader, ever holding himself in readiness to give counsel and general information as he may be qualified to do, and for which he has frequent applications. He is a Democrat in his political views, and actively interested in the progress of the party in local avenues. In religious belief he is a Catholic. His wife was brought up under the tenets of the Methodist Church. The mother of Mr. Spang died at her home in Ontario, Canada, aged 84 tears and five months.

"For five successive terms, Mathew Spang has been elected auditor of Itasca County. Perhaps no citizen is better known and more highly esteemed in that section of Minnesota. His has been a career of progressive enterprise and accomplishment. A number of years ago he was a log scaler in the woods of Northern Minnesota, and in every relation of life, whether in private business or public office, has been true to the trusts reposed in him.
Mathew A. Spang was born in the province of Ontario, Canada February 19, 1874. His parents were Anthony and Mary (Jennings) Spang, farming people of Ontario. From 1898 until 1902 Mr. Spang was engaged in the active outdoor work of log scaler, and in the latter year became deputy sheriff of Itasca County, an office he filled until 1904. Ruby Spang Horgan, 90, of Mountain Home passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2005 at a local hospital, with family by her side. Ruby was born June 9, 1915, along with her twin sister Ruth, in Grand View, Idaho, the daughter of Matt and Minnie Spang. She was raised and educated in Grand View. She married the love of her life, Mike Horgan on July 3, 1937 in Mountain Home. Mike and Ruby were each other´s dance partner for the rest of their lives. Ruby was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Royal Neighbors of America, Eastern Stars and the Elkettes. Ruby was an avid collector of dolls and loved shopping. Family and friends were often greeted at the door with the aroma of homemade breads and pies; she was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word, she made a house a home for her entire life and we are so thankful for that. She loved all of her grandchildren and enjoyed every moment spent with them. Besides her own family, she helped raise and shape the lives of the many children that she cared for; it was jokingly said that she potty trained half of the children in Mountain Home; many adults today will remember time spent on the "Little Red Chair." Ruby is survived by her daughters Ruth McIntyre of Austin, Texas, Patsy Roberts of Caldwell, and Betty Thompson and her husband Ron; her sons Bob Horgan and his wife Mary, and Tom Horgan and his wife Janet; her sister-in-law Evelyn Edwards, all of Mountain Home; her brother-in-law Frank Horgan of Colorado; and 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband Mike of 62 years, five brothers, three sisters, two sons, one daughter-in-law, and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005 at the Mountain Home Elks Lodge #2276. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Mountain Home. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruby´s name to the Elketts Club, 325 South 3rd West, Mountain Home, Idaho 83647. Arrangements are under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, Mountain Home. Mom, take Dad´s hand and join him in the next dance. We Love You.

Cain, Eileen Jean 92 04/04/1918 12/21/2010 Eileen Jean Cain was born in Franksville, Wis., to Ottilia and John Spang. She was the youngest of six children. Eileen graduated from nursing school at Milwaukee County General Hospital in 1939. From 1942 to 1946, she was a nurse anesthetist in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. While she was stationed in Big Springs, Texas, she took care of an Air Force bombardier, Bill Cain, whom she married in 1946. They had six children between 1947 and 1957. When the youngest of her children entered elementary school, Eileen returned to nursing as an administrator and as a consultant. After moving from San Antonio to the first addition of Lake Oswego in 1993, Eileen joined the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center where she worked on many fundraising projects. She also became a parishioner at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church where she participated in the 49ers. Volunteering, advocacy and charitable giving were necessary and rewarding parts of Eileen's life and she found many occasions to apply her varied interests. Eileen was an adventurer who understood that adventure could be found not only in kayaking in Alaska at the age of 80, but also in a walk around the block. She loved to travel and hear about others' travels. She had a deep appreciation of nature and spent time hiking, gardening and watching the birds visit her feeders. Her abiding faith was the foundation upon which she built a long, productive, happy life. In 2005 Eileen moved to Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego where she lived until her death. At Mary's Woods she enjoyed painting classes, poker, dancing and golfing. She volunteered on the Residents Council and the Health Committee. She was grateful to live in a community of exceptional people who became her friends. Eileen leaves behind many friends and family including her daughters, Candice O'Denver (Robert Feinberg), Colleen Cain (Philip Miller) and Patricia Cain (Rick Johnson); and sons, John Cain (Becky) and Kevin Cain (Kim). Her indomitable spirit will survive in her 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Bill, Eileen was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Cain. Eileen's family would like to thank Dr. Mark McKinstry, the community of Mary's Woods and the staff of the Marie Rose Center for their support and care. A memorial service will be held in February in the chapel at Mary's Woods, Lake Oswego. Eileen's family will gather this summer to spread Bill's and her ashes in Big Elk Meadow near Estes Park, Colo., where the two fell in love.
