from http://www.smokykin.com/ged/f004/f85/a0048534.htm

The origin of the Ridenour family is to be sought among the wild cliffs of the Rhine. In early times, they lived in the Rugesian Mountains, a warlike family, at the castle Shadeneck, a few miles from Koblenz.
The first man of whom we have knowledge, and who in all probability built the castle, was Pertinax Reitenauer. He with his man at arms, forced the people of the environment to help in the building of the castle. This proved so difficult, because of the high cliff, that five hundred men lost their lives in the work. His wife was Friedegund Von Ekenen: this name, however, has long since become extinct. Setting out from his fortress on the cliff, 'he laid waste the surrounding country for a great space.' He was killed by an arrow shot by mistake while on a hunt in 983 A. D.

In the year 1300, George Reitenauer was the only man of his family still living. In his nineteenth year, he married Isabella Fontenay, a countess of French extraction. Her estates lay in Picardy. He died in 1327 of wounds received in the Frierschin War. His son Bernard lived as his fathers before him. He carried off Anna Von Bauerheim, the beautiful daughter of Herman Von Bauerheim, Mayor of the City on the Rhine, and later married her. He had four sons, but only Rudolph remained at the castle Shadeneck, where in 1525 he took part in the suppression revolt.

IGI lists marriage as 4 Feb 1611.

131134 SPANG, Carl F. Of Wellesley, MA, and Durham, NH, passed away on March 1st 2012. All who knew him will miss him. Born in Quincy, MA, on December 20th, 1916, Carl was one of seven siblings. He attended Thayer Academy and Cornell University, excelling in football and other academic pursuits. Graduating from Cornell in 1939, having been named one of the All-America athletes of the year by the Associated Press, he entered the Navy as a pilot and served in the Pacific Front. After the Navy, he returned to Needham, MA, to help run the family business - Needham Manufacturing - with his brother William Spang. On June 22, 1946, he married Ruth Patterson of Wellesley, MA, and the couple settled into a charming replica Swiss farmhouse near Ruth's parent's home in Wellesley. They lived there for 20 years, raising two children, Sara and Carl Jr. In 1966 they moved to Ohio when Carl took a senior management position with Hobart Corporation of Dayton, OH. Carl enjoyed a successful sales career with Needham Manufacturing and during his early years with Hobart, when he managed Hobart's Sales for New England and the New York Metro Area. He was also an irrepressible inventor and was granted several patents for food preparation machines, following in the footsteps of his father, Joseph Spang, who invented the Cube Steak Machine. In 1968, Carl was inducted in the Cornell Athletic Hall of fame for his Football achievements. He also served on the Board of Reed and Barton for many years. He had a life-long passion for cuisine and its preparation. When in a restaurant, he would quickly make his way to the kitchen for a chat with the staff. A visit to the market would include going behind the meat counter to review slicers, grinders, and anything else mechanical. Ruth and Carl retired to Barnstable, MA, and enjoyed many years of activities on the Cape, especially with the Wianno Club (golf for Carl) and the Barnstable Public Library (literature for Ruth). Later they moved to North Hill in Needham, MA. After Ruth passed away in 2000, Carl moved to Durham, NH. Carl was appreciated and loved by all. Contributions to Carl's memory can be made to Cornell Football. 131140 Spang, Xavier
Xavier Spang was a very successful organ and melodeon builder in Syracuse, New York during the mid-19th Century era. Spang is first listed as building melodeons in 1860 at 64 -66 North Salina Street, Syracuse. His son, Rupert Spang, was also very active in the firm. Due to their success and superb reputation, the firm expanded to a larger factory on Noxon Street in 1874. In 1881, Xavier Spang went into partnership with a gentleman by the name of Mertens, and the name of the firm was changed to ?Spang & Mertens? . The partnership was relatively short-lived, and Xavier Spang was once again building instruments under his own name be 1886. Xavier Spang also built organs under the name of ?The Cabinet Organ Company?. There is no mention after 1890, indicating that Spang was out of business before the turn-of-the-century.
